How does the Fair4All Card Work?

How does the Fair4All Card Work?

The Card works in three main ways:

  • Proving legal entitlement
  • Explaining reasonable adjustments
  • Using the Fair4All Card

Proving Legal Entitlement

It confirms that the card holder is a disabled person as defined in law, and is therefore legally entitled to adjustments and exemptions. BuDS experts will assess every application against the strict legal test.

Explaining Reasonable Adjustments

The card lists the adjustments and exemptions that the card holder is entitled to in law. Again, BuDS experts will decide this by applying the strict legal tests.

Using the Fair4All Card

You can use your Fair4All Card anywhere in the UK or abroad, as the Card is designed to be easy to read and understand. BuDS works with shops, services, and organisations to help them recognise the Fair4All Card and to have confidence that anyone presenting the card is genuinely a disabled person who has a legal entitlement to the adjustments and exemptions listed on the card.

The Fair4All Card can be used anywhere because it lists ways others can help disabled people. There are no complicated symbols or abbreviations and it also doesn’t list any disabilities or conditions.

People have been able to use their Fair4All Card with airlines, hospitals and schools, and we’ve had successes across the UK and abroad.

What are Reasonable Adjustments?

Reasonable adjustments are things that other people can do to help you. This could include:

  • Providing you with flat access to a building
  • Knowing that you need clear instructions
  • Knowing that you use lip-reading to understand people
  • Knowing that you need to have a carer with you.

We have a lot more reasonable adjustments listed on our application form. If we haven’t thought of something, we also encourage you to give your own suggestions too.

What are Exemptions?

Exemptions are most commonly from Covid regulations. This could include:

  • Not being able to wear a face covering (being legally exempt)
  • Not being able to socially distance
  • Wanting other people to socially distance from you

We have a lot more exemptions listed on our application form. If we haven’t thought of something, we also encourage you to give your own suggestions too.

Recognition and Support

Unlike many other schemes, BuDS will actively support shops, services, and organisations to recognise the Fair4All Card and we will give them free training and accessibility advice.

The Fair4All Card scheme is recognised by Thames Valley Police.

You can download a flyer that asks shops, services and organisations you visit to join the scheme as Fair4All Card Partners.
